Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer

I love helping my clients feel confident in front of the camera. You don't need to be a model to look amazing in your photos. You just need the right guidance.

Meet Lydia!

Are you in the process of planning your dream wedding? As you dive into the world of wedding vendors, one key person you will need to hire is a wedding photographer. Your wedding photos are a treasured memento of your special day. They will be the one thing you have to look back on for the years to come, especially if you are not hiring a videographer or content creator.

So, how do you find the perfect fit? While checking out portfolios and reviews is a solid start, nothing can replace meeting with a photographer in-person or scheduling a phone call. To help you make an informed decision, here are 8 questions to ask a wedding photographer before hiring them.

1. Do You Use a Contract?

It is essential to work with a wedding photographer who uses a contract. Do not hire a vendor who does not utilize a contract. A contract protects both you and the photographer and outlines the terms of the agreement, including the services provided, payment schedule, and cancellation policy. Be sure to read through the contract carefully so you’re familiar with your photographer’s process. Key items that most couples overlook is turnaround time for the gallery, and cost of additional hours.

2. Do You Have 3 Full Galleries That You Can Send Us?

Asking to see full galleries of weddings that a photographer has completed for previous clients will give you a better idea of their style and consistency. Full galleries give you a comprehensive view of their work, from getting ready shots to the ceremony and reception. Look for a photographer who pays attention to the details, has the ability to capture candid moments and emotions and keeps the style consistent throughout various lighting scenarios. Viewing multiple full galleries will help you assess the quality of their work and determine if they are the right fit for your wedding.

3. We Are Awkward. Do You Help with Posing?

If you and your partner feel a bit camera shy or awkward in front of the lens, it’s essential to find a photographer who can help you feel at ease. Asking whether they provide guidance on posing and capturing natural, candid moments will ensure you feel comfortable and confident on your wedding day.

4. Do You Provide a Photography Timeline?

Having a photography timeline for your wedding day ensures that all essential moments are captured. A professional photographer will usually work with you to create a timeline that allows enough time for group photos, couple portraits, and candid moments, etc.

5. When Will We Receive the Full Gallery?

Knowing when you can expect to receive your full gallery of wedding photos is crucial. Some photographers take longer than others to deliver the final images, so make sure you are clear on the timeline before signing a contract. If you desire to receive sneak peeks (a few key photos delivered shortly after your wedding day), be sure to ask the photographer if this is something they include in their workflow.

6. Do You Retouch Your Photos?

Editing and retouching: These two terms are often used interchangeably even though they are two very different things. Editing is pretty standard in wedding photography, but not all photographers include retouching as part of their package. The extent to which photos are retouched can also vary. Be sure to ask your photographer about their editing/retouching process. You’ll also want to discuss any costs you make incur by requesting additional services after you see the full gallery.

7. How Do You Handle a Wedding Day When Things Go Wrong?

No wedding day goes perfectly according to plan. This is why it is essential to hire a wedding photographer who can adapt to unexpected situations. Ask your photographer how they handle unforeseen circumstances, such as inclement weather or timeline delays.

8. What is the Process After Booking You Like?

Understanding the photographer’s workflow after booking is essential for a smooth experience. Ask about the steps involved after signing the contract, such as engagement sessions, consultations, and finalizing timelines and shot lists. Some photographers stay in touch consistently throughout the planning process. Others will not check in until closer to the day to finalize the details. Think carefully about what you would prefer in regards to how hands on or hand off your photographer will be.

These 8 questions to ask a wedding photographer during your consultation will not only help you gauge their experience, expertise, and reliability but also ensure that you are on the same page in terms of expectations. Remember, your wedding photos are something you will cherish for a lifetime, so it’s worth taking the time to find the perfect photographer who can capture your special day in a way that reflects your unique love story.

You may feel some pressure to quickly book a photographer and get it checked off your to-do list. However, this is a decision you really do not want to rush. Take the time to find a photographer who understands your vision and has the ability to put your mind at ease. Happy planning!
