As an engagement and wedding photographer based in Tennessee, beach engagement sessions are a rare treat. Since we’re landlocked, I don’t get the opportunity to photograph couples along the coast. So when I knew I’d be visiting Hilton Head Island, finding a couple for a Hilton Head engagement session immediately went to the top of my list.
My search started on TikTok, where I connected with an incredible local couple who were excited to step in front of my camera. Both are Hilton Head natives, but despite growing up on the island, they attended different high schools. They shared mutual friends, yet somehow it took Snapchat to bring them together. Five years later, they’re beginning the exciting journey of planning their wedding.
Sunrise Engagement Photos in Hilton Head
We met at Coligny Beach just before sunrise for a 6:00 a.m. engagement session. While an early wake-up call isn’t for everyone, sunrise is one of my favorite times for engagement sessions. The soft light creates beautiful skin tones and the temperatures are cooler. It’s also about as quiet as the beach gets before the crowds arrive.
Before the session, I helped the bride-to-be choose an outfit that would photograph beautifully against the coastal scenery. She wore a light yellow satin maxi dress from Hello Molly that complemented the soft morning colors perfectly. The wind definitely made an appearance that morning and there were already plenty of beachgoers enjoying the sunrise, but we embraced both. The breeze added beautiful movement to their photos and gave the entire session a relaxed, coastal feel.
This Hilton Head engagement session was everything I had hoped for. From the golden sunrise over Coligny Beach to getting to know such a wonderful couple, it reminded me why I love photographing engagement sessions in new places. I can’t wait for my next trip back to Hilton Head.
